Sunday, May 13, 2018

During a meeting with the Iranian Minister of Economy, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Bulgaria, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union Council, insisted on continuing the cooperation of the Union with Iran, calling the Islamic Republic a strategic partner of Europe.

(SHADA: TEHRAN) -- Masoud Karbasian, Iran’s Minister of Economy, said that the meeting with the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Bulgaria, in particular with regard to his country's presidency over the European Union Council, was very important, stating: During the meeting, the Bulgarian Minister of Economy welcomed the development of bilateral ties with a very positive and honest spirit.

Iran and Bulgaria have long-standing economic ties in the fields of industry, agriculture and transportation, and this visit provides a good opportunity to develop these relations for both sides: Karbasian said.

Fortunately, the major agreements, including the avoidance of double taxation and customs co-operation between the two sides, have been signed, and a number of other agreements will be negotiated in my forthcoming visit to Bulgaria in September, he added.

The Bulgarian Presidency of the European Union Council is a very good opportunity to pursue negotiations with this union in the current situation, the Iranian Minister of Economy reminded.

He further said that Bulgaria and Iran are common transit gateways to Europe and Asia, adding: The connection of Iran to the former Soviet Union railways and, in fact, the European Land, is a good opportunity for the development of transit cooperation through Azerbaijan, and in the later stages, Georgia and Armenia as new routes.

The Bulgarian Minister of Economy Emil Karanikolov, for his part, pointed to his country’s long-standing relations with Iran, said: At today's meeting, we examined ways to develop relations and facilitate cooperation among economic actors.

In response to the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and the EU position in this regard he said: Iran is a strategic partner of the European Union, and Bulgaria, as the EU Council's Chief, will pursue this relationship both today and after the end of its presidency.

Karanikolov further said Bulgaria seeks to expand its financial and banking cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He called Bulgaria a true and foreseeable partner for Iran and said: This country will prove its friendship in practice with Iran.

I am personally the chairman of the two ‘business’ and ‘competitiveness’ councils in the European Union, and I strongly support the continuation of Iran's cooperation with the Union, and the subject of Iran will be considered as the agenda for the first meeting of the union in Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, Karanikolov noted.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on the cooperation of the free zones of Iran with the National Company Industrial Zones of Bulgaria.
