Iran, Sri Lanka Discuss Repayment of Financing for Uma Oya Dam Project

TEHRAN — The Export Development Bank of Iran (EDBI) has discussed arrangements for settling outstanding claims related to its financing of Sri Lanka’s Uma Oya dam project, with the bank’s chief executive calling for a clear repayment schedule and an effective mechanism to recover the funds.

According to Iran’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, EDBI chief executive Shabaan Moradi met with Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Iran, Fazeeha Azmi, to review the status of the bank’s financing for the project and explore ways to expedite the settlement of outstanding receivables.

Moradi stressed the need to set a clear repayment timetable and put practical arrangements in place to resolve the outstanding financial obligations. He also underscored the importance of honoring financial commitments in international economic relations and called for continued cooperation with the Iranian side to settle the foreign-currency debt.

Highlighting EDBI’s role in supporting infrastructure and development projects through international financing, Moradi said that financial obligations arising from such projects required regular follow-up and resolution.

Azmi expressed appreciation for EDBI’s contribution to the Uma Oya project, noting that it had played an important role in Sri Lanka’s development by supporting energy supply, expanding irrigation networks and strengthening economic infrastructure.

EDBI participated in financing the construction of the Uma Oya dam project in Sri Lanka in 2015.
