The agreement was signed by Foroud Asgari, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), and Maksat Khudaikuliyev (Hudaykuliyev), head of the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan, at the conclusion of a meeting between senior customs delegations from the two countries, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance’s Shada news outlet.
Under the programme, the two sides will arrange technical meetings to increase the daily truck-handling capacity at their shared border crossing in Sarakhs. The initiative is intended to facilitate cross-border movement, reduce waiting times and expand bilateral trade.
The programme also prioritizes increasing rail freight capacity at the Sarakhs border crossing, a key component of efforts to strengthen transport links between the neighbouring countries.
In addition, the two customs administrations will work to develop border infrastructure and ease vehicle movements at the Lotfabad crossing, with a focus on addressing traffic bottlenecks and speeding up the passage of vehicles.
The agreement is part of broader efforts by Iran and Turkmenistan to improve border management, streamline transport operations, and facilitate trade between the two neighbouring countries.
