Hossein Forouzan, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Free Trade-Industrial and Special Economic Zones, confirmed that Tehran has taken the required administrative and infrastructural steps to activate the zone. “The necessary measures have been carried out by the Iranian side, and the matter is currently being pursued through joint coordination channels,” he stated.
Speaking to SHADA, Forouzan underscored that the proposed free zone is poised to significantly unlock the economic and commercial potential between the two neighboring countries. He pointed to Khoy’s strategic location along the Iran-Turkey transit corridor and its proximity to the border as key assets that make it an ideal site for expanding bilateral trade, logistics, and economic cooperation.
“The establishment of a joint free zone in this region can facilitate cross-border commerce, streamline economic exchanges, attract foreign direct investment, and boost both productive and service-oriented activities,” Forouzan explained. “It would ultimately serve to deepen the economic linkages between Iran and Turkey.”
He reiterated that while Iran has fulfilled its commitments and is ready to proceed, the implementation timeline now hinges on Turkey’s corresponding measures. “We have done our part. We are now waiting for the Turkish side to take its next step to move the plan forward,” he emphasized.
Beyond its immediate bilateral trade benefits, Forouzan noted that the joint zone could play a pivotal role in fostering broader regional cooperation and leveraging the shared capacities of the two countries. He stressed the importance of sustained follow-up on the issue to ensure that all executive prerequisites are met, and the zone becomes fully operational.
Iran and Turkey, both regional economic powers, have in recent years sought to expand their trade volume, which currently stands at several billion dollars annually, with ambitious targets set for future growth. The Khoy joint free zone is seen as a flagship initiative in that effort, offering a platform for enhanced industrial collaboration and transit connectivity.
