Iran’s Economy Minister Reviews Trade and Transit Potential in Maku Free Zone

MAKU, Iran – Economy Minister Seyyed Ali Madanizadeh has reviewed trade and transit opportunities and infrastructure bottlenecks in the Maku Free Zone during a visit to the Sari-Su Trade Exchange Center and the Bazargan Customs Terminal in West Azerbaijan Province.

During his one-day provincial trip, Madanizadeh examined the condition of border and commercial infrastructure, obstacles to cross-border trade, and measures to facilitate the movement of international transit trucks and passengers.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance’s SHADA news service, discussions during the visits focused on expanding border trade, the requirements for reopening the Sari-Su border market, and resolving traffic bottlenecks at the Bazargan border crossing.

Sari-Su border market reopening under review
At the first stop, the minister visited the Sari-Su Trade Exchange Center to assess its existing infrastructure and the requirements for reopening the local border market.
The visit also focused on the center’s potential to expand cross-border trade, existing operational obstacles, and ways to make better use of the area's economic and commercial opportunities.
Reopening the Sari-Su border market, subject to the provision of the necessary infrastructure and operating conditions, could help expand trade exchanges, stimulate economic activity and create employment opportunities in the Maku Free Zone and surrounding areas.

Measures to ease transit and passenger traffic at Bazargan
Madanizadeh subsequently visited the Bazargan Customs Terminal, where he examined the movement of international freight vehicles and passengers through the border crossing.
The discussions addressed obstacles facing transit trucks and passengers, customs procedures, and measures to accelerate and facilitate cross-border traffic.
The minister was also briefed on issues involving border infrastructure and customs operations. Addressing these challenges could reduce customs clearance times, improve services, and enhance the efficiency of traffic through the international crossing.

Strengthening Maku’s trade and logistics capacity
The field visits were aimed at assessing the region’s economic potential, identifying infrastructure constraints, and examining practical ways to facilitate cross-border trade and transit.
Located along Iran’s border with Türkiye, the Maku Free Zone benefits from a strategic geographical position and considerable potential for expanding foreign trade, international transportation and economic ties with neighboring countries.
Madanizadeh was accompanied by Hossein Forouzan, secretary of the High Council of Free and Special Economic Zones, members of the Iranian Parliament, the governor-general of West Azerbaijan Province, and a number of provincial and local officials.
The reopening of the Sari-Su border market, removal of traffic bottlenecks at Bazargan Customs, and improvement of commercial and logistics infrastructure were among the main issues addressed during the visit. Following up on these priorities could facilitate trade procedures, make better use of the region’s border-related economic potential, and strengthen Maku’s role in Iran’s trade and transit networks.
