Special Financial Mechanisms Can Help Expand Iran–Tajikistan Ties Beyond Sanctions

Dr. Seyed Ali Madanizadeh, Iran’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, met with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on the sidelines of the Dushanbe International Investment Forum.

In this cordial meeting, the minister conveyed warm greetings from the President of Iran and emphasized the importance of strengthening friendly relations and expanding economic, trade, and infrastructure cooperation between the two countries. He also proposed practical strategies to deepen bilateral ties under current global conditions.

According to Shada, the meeting took place during Dr. Madanizadeh’s participation in the Dushanbe Investment Forum. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to meet, he delivered a message of friendship and goodwill from Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and noted that President Pezeshkian looks forward to hosting President Rahmon in Tehran.

Highlighting the significance of fraternal relations between Iran and Tajikistan, Dr. Madanizadeh stated that President Pezeshkian places special emphasis on expanding cooperation across all sectors. He also expressed sincere appreciation for Tajikistan’s principled and courageous stance in condemning the recent attacks by the Zionist regime and the United States against Iran, describing this support as a reflection of Tajikistan’s deep understanding of the region’s sensitive dynamics and the need to uphold lasting peace and stability.

Dr. Ali Madanizadeh congratulated President Rahmon on the successful organization of recent international summits, particularly the high-level gathering held in the beautiful city of Dushanbe. He noted that bilateral relations between Iran and Tajikistan have significantly progressed in recent years.

Referring to the current geopolitical challenges including, recent aggressions and intensified sanctions, he described the situation as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation. He proposed the establishment of special financial and banking mechanisms, the use of national currencies, barter systems, and joint project implementation to ensure economic collaboration remains resilient and independent of external pressures.

The minister added that substantial opportunities exist for cooperation in various sectors. Iranian companies are ready to actively participate in infrastructure development projects in Tajikistan, including construction, energy, road building, housing, and urban development.

He also pointed to practical collaboration in the energy sector, including the construction of hydropower plants, the development of electricity transmission lines connecting Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, and the expansion of renewable energy initiatives. In trade and banking, he emphasized the importance of establishing direct payment channels, using national currencies, and creating reciprocal credit lines to facilitate economic exchanges.

Dr. Madanizadeh announced Iran’s readiness to establish a joint science and technology park, support the growth of knowledge-based companies, and assist Tajikistan in digitalizing its economy.

He expressed appreciation for President Rahmon’s support in resolving issues related to the Sangtuda-2 power project and requested assistance in settling outstanding claims between Iranian and Tajik banks dating back several years. He proposed that a designated representative from Tajikistan be appointed to work with a counterpart from Iran’s Ministry of Economy to jointly address and resolve these matters.

Emphasizing the strong capabilities of Iranian engineering and technical firms, Dr. Madanizadeh stated that their active presence in Tajikistan would not only contribute to infrastructure development but also facilitate the transfer of Iranian technical expertise and engineering know-how.

He concluded by saying that Iran and Tajikistan can play a vital role in the regional supply chain across energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and technical services. By leveraging their combined strengths, both countries can elevate their economic standing in the region.

At the end of the meeting, Dr. Madanizadeh once again thanked President Rahmon and the Tajik government for their warm hospitality and said, “We eagerly look forward to hosting President Rahmon in Tehran, where we can engage in constructive dialogue on the strategic and long-term dimensions of our bilateral cooperation.”
